Is the DLSS 5 Mod Safe? What to Know Before You Install

Short answer: the tools themselves are safe. The risk comes from where you download them.

Most malware reports are not about the mod. They are about fake copies of it. Here is how to stay safe.

Use Official Sources Only

The OptiScaler team has posted a clear warning on their GitHub page. They say they do not have an official website. They also do not have an official manager app.

Only these places are real:

  • Their official GitHub page
  • Their official Discord server
  • Nitec’s NexusMods page

OptiScaler is free. If a site asks you for money, it is a scam.

Signs of a fake site

  • It asks you to pay for the mod
  • It offers a special “manager app” or “installer”
  • It hosts the DLL file on its own server
  • It tells you to turn off your antivirus first
  • The download is an .exe file when it should be a .zip

The user-uploaded file problem

This is a real case, not a rumour. Tom’s Hardware reported it in July 2026.

The DLSS Swapper app is safe. The files it verifies are safe too. The app checks security hashes against official sources before showing any file.

But users can also upload their own DLL files to the project’s GitHub page. Those files are not checked. Someone uploaded malware with a comment saying “this fixed it for me”.

A DLL file runs code on your PC. So never download a DLL from a random comment or issue thread. Stick to verified files only.

The bigger risk: your game account

People talk about viruses. They talk less about this one.

The OptiScaler team gives a direct warning: do not use this mod with online games. It can trigger anti-cheat software. That can get your account banned.

Use these mods in single-player games only. No frame rate gain is worth losing your account.

How to check a file yourself

  1. Download only from the official GitHub release page
  2. Upload the file to VirusTotal before you open it
  3. Check the file type — mods come as .zip, not .exe
  4. Keep your antivirus turned on while you install
